Fukushima: Mark 1 Nuclear Reactor Design Caused GE Scientist To Quit In Protest

March 16th, 2011

Thirty-five years ago, Dale G. Bridenbaugh and two of his colleagues at General Electric resigned from their jobs after becoming increasingly convinced that the nuclear reactor design they were reviewing — the Mark 1 — was so flawed it could lead to a devastating accident.

Questions persisted for decades about the ability of the Mark 1 to handle the immense pressures that would result if the reactor lost cooling power, and today that design is being put to the ultimate test in Japan. Five of the six reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, which has been wracked since Friday’s earthquake with explosions and radiation leaks, are Mark 1s.

Japan earthquake shifted Earth on its axis

March 13th, 2011

Friday’s magnitude 8.9 earthquake in Japan shifted Earth on its axis and shortened the length of a day by a hair. In the future, scientists said, it will provide an unusually precise view of how Earth is deformed during massive earthquakes at sites where one plate is sliding under another, including the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

The unusually rich detail comes from an extensive network of sensors that were placed at sites across Japan after that country’s Kobe earthquake of 1995, a magnitude 6.8 quake that killed more than 6,000 people because its epicenter was near a major city.

Incredible swarms of fish form off coast of Acapulco (Mexico)

March 13th, 2011

The shores of Acapulco’s beaches were this weekend teeming with masses of fish packed so tightly they looked like an oil slick from above.

Thousands of sardines, anchovies, stripped bass and mackerel surged along the coast of the Mexican resort in an event believed to be linked to the devastating Japanese tsunami.

Delighted fishermen rushed out in wooden motor boats, abandoning their rods and nets and simply scooping the fish up with buckets.

Moon to look bigger next weekend during ‘lunar perigee’

March 10th, 2011

Another article discussing the upcoming full moon perigee….
As I’ve stated in the previous moon article: Perigees and Apogees happen once a month, the uniqueness of this perigee is its closeness to the earth.

The moon will appear bigger next weekend as it makes its closest approach to earth for 19 years during an event known as a “lunar perigee”.

And this

Previous “supermoons” occured around the time natural disasters - including the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami and Cyclone Tracy which devastated the Australian city of Darwin in 1974 - but scientists say there is no evidence to suggest the phenomenon is a sign of impending doom.

The wording in this article is questionable in my view and, very subjective, with the use of phrases like “impending doom” etc.

All that I can say here is that the moon DOES influence the weather! It does so by pulling the atmosphere of the earth underneath it as it goes by.  The closer it is , the more the pull. There are people who do predicting of the weather via the moon, as well as planets in our solar system with a 70+% accuracy . This type of predicting the weather is called astro-meteorology or astro-weather.
